Day 17: Adapt to any Day of School, 11 to 19. The Clip Collection allows children to see each teen number as one group of ten and some leftovers. For example, on Day of School 17, children can see one full chain of ten clips and seven extras.

When writing 17, if we say “1 group of 10 clips” as we write the 1, and say “and 7 extra ones” as the 7 is recorded, children can begin to see that for numbers 10 to 99 the first digit we write represents groups of ten. Thinking of each teen number as a group of ten and leftovers, and learning to record the one ten first, can reduce the number of children who reverse digits when writing a number.
