Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 39.

By the beginning of October, the counting pattern of 1 to 9 followed by Zero the Hero’s appearance on 10 and then 20, will have repeated itself twice on the Counting Tape. Children may start to notice that the color sequence in the teen numbers is the same as the first ten numbers. When the sequence starts over, they can see 11 is ten plus 1 more, 12 is ten and 2 more, 13 is ten and 3 more and so on.

The Clip Collection also provides a continuing opportunity to collect and count groups of ten. If we continue to model that we write a number by writing the number of groups of ten first and then the number of extra ones, children will come to associate the first digit with the groups of ten and the second digit with the ones, furthering their understanding of place value and preventing reversals when they write.
