Grade K: EDC Daily Depositor – Beginning of December

Instructor Notes:

For materials preparations, click ‘Back to Main Menu’ button and select ‘Getting Started – EDC Setup’.

Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 62-64.

This month the Daily Depositor makes use of 1 x 10 inch strips that will have one unit colored in each day of the month.

Changing the color after five makes it both easier to count the number of shaded units at a glance and to think of the sets six to nine as 5 and 1, 5 and 2, 5 and 3, and 5 and 4.

From the 10th of the month forward each completed strip of ten is moved over to the blue tens side and a fresh strip is displayed on the white ones side. Each day the class tells how many 10’s and how many extra ones they see as you record the 10’s and 1’s digits below (or above) the place value mat.

For a fun wrap-up activity to do prior to winter break, along with a related take-home game children can play over vacation, see EDC, p. 62-64.
