Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 33-35.

On the days when 11 to 18 dots appear in the double ten grids and students are reviewing the 10+ facts, make sure to also take time to look at subtracting from the day’s total.

For example, when 10+5 appears, we can look at the subtraction facts 15–9, 15-8, 15-7, and 15–6 and see how taking any of these amounts “out of the ten” and then adding what’s left to the extras in the other grid provides an efficient way to find the difference.

On days after the 18th, use double ten grids showing 11 to 18 to practice both 10+ addition facts and subtraction facts that take an amount away from 11 to 18.
