Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 40-41.

By Day 30 when the minute hand has made its journey halfway around the clock, we can help children see 30 minutes is half an hour and that one whole hour is twice as many, or 60 minutes. We can also practice counting by fives using the five-minute marks on the Clock.

On Day 30, you might want to invite the class to try to “catch the clock” whenever they recognize the minute hand pointing straight down and then you can take a moment to point out the position of the hour hand and state the time together (e.g. “The short hour hand is after the two, so it is half past two in the afternoon or 2:30 p.m.”)
