Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 39.

As the odd and even pattern continues you might focus occasionally on the 1,3,5,7,9 odd number pattern, and the 0,2,4,6,8 even number pattern appearing within each decade in the one’s place. Asking why it is that only the one’s place matters when determining if a number is odd or even, may provide a challenge to even some of your highest performing students. What is it about the groups of ten preceding each new decade that make it so only the numbers appearing in the newest decade decide if a number is odd or even? The underlined fives also provide an invitation to count by fives and to look at the pattern in the one’s place for the multiples of five.
