Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 34.

This month, the top pocket collects five objects and the top ten grid collects five dots through October 5th, and then the bottom pocket and ten frame collect one each day through October 10th. The purpose is to review 5+ facts and help second graders think of 6, 7, 8, and 9 as 5+1, 5+2, 5+3, and 5+4. This can be very helpful later when mastering the harder addition facts with addends 6 to 9. For example, some children will find adding 8 + 6 easy when they can think of “pulling out the fives” to make 10 and have 3+1 left to make the sum 14.

On some days encourage the sharing of stories and record accompanying number sentences. On other days, have the class list the full fact family focusing on the inverse relationship between adding to find the total, and starting with the total and taking one part away to find the missing amount that is left.
