Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 22.

To help children see the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction, you can play “How many are hiding?” Just cover half of any Double Ten Grid record created during the month, announce the sum, and ask children to figure out the number of missing dots.

It won’t be long before many children discover that if they know 8 + 2 is 10, then 10 minus the 2 dots they see must leave 8 hiding behind the paper. This activity helps children internalize the part/part/whole relationships that fact families are based upon.

For more part/part/whole activities see the classic resource Mathematics Their Way (A.Wesley), Ch 7-9.
