Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 18-20.

At month’s end you might ask everyone to turn to the person beside them and pair and share, taking turns identifying for each other as many different patterns as they can. Then they can share their observations with the class.

Listing everyone’s observations on a class poster is one way to honor all the discoveries. Notice if students use the vocabulary you have modeled, such as count by, even, odd, multiple of two, adding pattern, diagonal, square, rotated, congruent, breaks up into groups of three, multiples of 3, etc., when describing the patterns they see. By month’s end assess individual students to make sure everyone can count by 2’s and 3’s to 30 without hesitation. September may also be a good time to assess individuals on mastery of the x2 multiplication facts.
