Instructor Notes:

For materials preparations, click ‘Back to Main Menu’ button and select ‘Getting Started – EDC Setup’.

Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 41.

While the Depositor will need to be updated every day of school, you may want to discuss it only on days that offer the opportunity to try out a variety of mental math strategies. On Day 24, for example, a student may suggest moving one from the 276 to the 24 to make it 275+25, or 300, often referred to as a Make a Friendly Number, Put and Take, or Compensation strategy.

Another student may suggest adding 20 to 276 to get to 296 and then 4 more to 300, using Counting on the Tens first. Someone else may see 2 hundred plus 90 plus 10 to get to 300, using Front End adding.

Finally, there will be some who start with the ones and make a ten to put with the nine tens to get to a hundred to put with the two hundred, using mental regrouping or carrying.
