After November 9th, you will stop adding dots to the top grid. On November 10th, begin adding one dot to the bottom grid to show 9 +1 = 10. On the 11th, add one more dot to the bottom grid to show 9 + 2 = 11, and so on.

By November 13th, with 9 + 4 appearing in the grids, we can talk through using a “fast ten strategy”. We can visualize one dot moving up to the nine to make a “fast ten”. We can say “One moves up to make a ten, and the three left on the bottom make thirteen”. We can continue to try out this strategy, among others, as we work with 9+4, 9+5, 9+6, 9+7, 9+8, and 9+9 in the following days.

Many teachers print extra copies of the Double Ten Grid to make dot picture cards for the 9+ facts. They use them for quick group oral practice.
