Grade 2: EDC Counting Tape – Day of School – Day 17

Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 23-25.

Days 11 to 19 provide a chance to focus on reading, writing, and interpreting the teen numbers as groups of ten and leftovers.

For example, on the Counting Tape on Day 17, we see and say “1 group of 10 yellow squares” as we record the digit 1 and say “7 extra blue ones”, as we record the digit 7.

A child who says “one group of ten and seven” when writing seventeen, hears the digit 1 first, making it less likely to reverse the digits.

Filling in the 17th Day of School on the Hundred Chart provides a second way for children to see 1 group of ten in the top row and 7 extra ones (in the row below).
