Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 18.

At month’s end you might ask everyone to turn to the person beside them and pair and share, taking turns identifying for each other as many different patterns as they can. Then encourage the sharing of observations. Making a poster of all the ideas is one way to honor the children’s discoveries.

Notice if they use the vocabulary you have modeled such as count by, even, odd, goes up by twos, adding pattern, diagonal pattern, abab pattern, every other one pattern, etc., when describing the patterns they see.

You may want to assess individual students to see if they can explain what makes an even number even and an odd number odd. Also, you may want to check to see if everyone can count by 2’s to at least 20, with ease. After a month of talking about the attributes of rectangles and squares, can everyone explain why squares belong to the rectangle family?
