Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 36.

After October 10th, from the 11th to the 19th, the focus will be on helping everyone discover the pattern that adding 1 to 9 to a group of ten results in the teen number itself. Some children, who may still be counting on when adding 10 + 4, have never listened to hear the “four” in the sum 14. We may need to help them recognize the “five” in 15 when adding 10 + 5 and getting “fifteen”, or hearing the “six” in 16 when adding 10 + 6, and so on.

We can continue to use the addition fact for the day to build a fact family that includes two ways to join the two sets and two ways to begin with the total and break it apart. When time allows, we’ll continue to ask children to suggest story situations and a number sentence to go with the day’s counters.
