To introduce this month’s measurement element, you might show children a 12 inch strip mounted on a piece of construction paper and then draw a picture of a shoe print around the strip to represent a “foot”. A volunteer could also place a foot ruler below the strip to show the correspondence between the inch spaces on the strip and the inch markings on the ruler.
One inch will be colored in each day of November, alternating the color every five inches. To get a better feel for measuring length in inches, the class will try to find something to place on the tape each day that will match the day’s length.
On the 13th of the month, another blank 12-inch strip can be added, so children can see that 13 inches is the same as 1 foot, 1 inch. Since it will be more difficult to estimate these longer lengths and to match them to items in the room, it may be more fun, after the 12th, to collect some items in a shoe box and once or twice a week let a helper choose an item for the class to estimate and measure to the nearest inch, using the colored inch strip.
