Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 58.
To introduce the penny and nickel we suggest you pass around a real nickel and a penny for children to examine and then share ways they are alike. Then look for ways they are different. This will help them recognize both real nickels and pennies and pictures on worksheets and tests.
Place one penny in the Coin Counter for November 1st and one penny for November 2nd. On the 5th, engage the class in the exchange for the first nickel. On the 6th through the 9th, use the coins to see 6, 7, 8, 9 as 5+1, 5+2, 5+ 3 and 5+4.
