Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 59.

The minutes just before the hour are often the most difficult for students to read a real clock or watch. Playing “Catch the Clock” on Day 45 will help children see that the hour hand on the real classroom clock doesn’t move up to the next hour until the long minute hand has made it all the way around to 12.

Let the children raise their hands whenever they catch the minute hand on the classroom clock at 45 minutes after the hour. Help the class read the hour hand first, pointing out how difficult it is to tell the hour until one looks at where the long minute hand is pointing. If it’s not yet straight up, all the way to 60 minutes, it’s still the old hour.
