By midmonth the class will be getting lots of practice with teen numbers. Encourage children to say “One group of ten and __ extra ones” as you record the digits. When the second group of ten moves over to the tens side of the mat, they can say “two groups of ten and no extra ones” as you record 2 for the tens and 0 for the extra ones. By the 24th of the month, everyone can see that 24 is the same as two groups of ten and four extra ones. Let student helpers take over the recording when you find some children able to do so.
