During the first week of November, Domino Number Builder is used to play a memory game, Make a Match. It gives children practice with instant recognition of small sets and matching sets with numerals. The 1-4 Domino Halves and the 1-4 Numeral Dot Cards are mixed up and placed facedown in two rows on the Make a Match poster. Each day a child chooses two cards to turn over. If they match, they are taken down. If they don’t, they are turned back over. Play continues each day until one match is found.

The game also provides the chance to model position words. For example, “So, you want us to turn over the first card in the top row and the next-to-last card in the bottom row.” Later in the month, we can encourage the children to use these terms such as top, bottom, first, second, third, next-to-last, and last to tell which cards they are choosing.
