Whenever 5 or more clips are in the last chain, we can begin asking, “How many more clips do we need to get to ten to finish this chain?”

By continuing to model that we read 45 as “forty-five”, but when we write it we say “4 groups of ten and 5 extra ones” as we record each digit, children will gain confidence writing any two digit number, including the teen numbers, without reversals.
