Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 64-66.
This month, by coloring one dot red and the rest blue on each domino, we can see and talk about a number being one more than the number before.
Looking at the domino for five, we see 5 is 4 blue dots and 1 more red dot. We can say “5 is 1 more than 4”. We can act out and tell “one more than” stories to go with the day’s domino. “There were 4 children playing at the park and 1 more child came to play. Now there were 5.”
Encourage children to contribute their own stories. See EDC p. 65-66, for more 1 more /1 less language activities. While the concept is not difficult, the ability to use the language of one more and one less to describe number relationships is often slow to develop, unless children are exposed to lots of modeling and given opportunities to use the language.
