Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 60-62.

Before vacation break you may want to ask students to tell you what they have noticed on the Calendar so far. It is rewarding when children use terms they have heard for two weeks to tell about the red triangles, or the pairs of blue squares, or to point out the red, blue, blue pattern they have seen “copying itself” over and over.

This is a good time to reinforce the idea that triangles can look quite different from one another, but still be triangles if they have three sides and three corners. Revisit coauthor Patsy Kanter’s “hook and look” activity, inviting three children at a time to each use his or her pointer finger to pull on a large loop of string and examine the resulting triangles. The triangles will vary depending on where the children grab the string and how hard they pull.
