By November 17th, we hope the class can say , “We read the number, seventeen, but we write it as 1 group of ten and 7 extra ones.” Practice counting on from the full ten grid, as you touch each stamp on the white side, saying 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and then ask the class to tell you how to proceed to write the numeral.

With seven extra stamps in one of the grids, I would also ask, “How can we know there are seven stamps on this grid without having to count them one at a time?”
