Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 43.

The Clock continues to provide practice counting by fives and ones. When counting by fives around the Clock, clapping together on the last five-minute mark helps children make the switch from counting by fives to counting by ones. Clapping on the last five can also help children when counting groups of five tally marks or when counting up the value of nickels and pennies.

If you found playing “Catch the Classroom Clock” helped children learn to read the clock at the half hour, (See Oct 1 Photos and Questions), you may want to play again on Day 35 and Day 40 to help children recognize and read the clock when the minute hand is 35 or 40 minutes past any hour.
