By midmonth, we can invite the class to say the red, red, red, yellow pattern or circle, circle, circle, rectangle pattern as a helper points to each piece. Try to “keep it going” beyond the day’s date. This helps children see how patterns help us to predict what may come next. We can ask, “What color or what shape will appear tomorrow?” and “What makes you think this?”

The square appearing on the 12th may be a surprise. Is it a rectangle? What do squares have that make them all belong to the rectangle family? What makes them special and different from the other rectangles?
