Broken counting is often a difficult skill for first graders to master. We can use the clock for practice by counting the minutes by fives, clapping on the last five, and counting on the remaining minutes by ones.

Some teachers like to write 5, 10, 15, 20 around the outside of the Clock to help children see the groups of five. I like to show these numbers some weeks and erase them for other weeks so children don’t become too dependent on them. See the EDC T.E. for the suggestion of also showing the total minutes with a tally near the Clock.
