Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 55-56.

The Counting Tape will be used to practice rounding to the nearest ten by deciding if the day’s number is halfway or more to the next ten or not.

The longer Counting Tape also offers a daily invitation to do try out and practice various counting up strategies when doing mental math to add and subtract in response to word problems we can pose during discussions. For example, on Day 48, we could pose a “take away”, a “comparing”, and a “missing part” subtraction problem to demonstrate that all three subtraction situations lend themselves to counting up to find the difference.

Take away problem example: “If you had saved up $48 and spent $29 on a new pair of pants, how much money would you have left?”
