Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 40-42.

To practice adding and taking away ten from any number, we can ask, “How many dots will we have if we add one group of ten?” or “How many will we have if we take one full ten away?” Volunteers can “prove it” by acting it out.

On Day 38, we can also play “Convince Us”, asking children to tell how they know there are 8 dots in the ten grid on the white mat. Someone may say they see 5 + 3 to make 8. Someone else may see 6 + 2 to make 8. Someone else may say it’s 8 because two more will make 10.
