Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 39.

The last week of October, we use inch tiles or other nonstandard units and invite children to “guess and check” the length of an object to the nearest unit. After showing children how to line up the first unit with one end of the object, record their estimates of the length.

After the “guesses” have been tallied, a volunteer can line up more units to see how many units are needed to match the length to the nearest unit. This rounding to the nearest unit often leads to talking about half a unit as children decide if the length is less than halfway or more than halfway to the next unit.
