This month Number Builder will help children learn all the addition and take away subtraction combinations for 6. The focus will be on the part/part/whole relationship when a set of six objects is separated into two parts and added together or when one part is taken away as shown in the photo.

Encourage children to tell stories that go along with the counters in the pockets and to record each story with a number sentence. At the end of the month some teachers like to cut off all the number sentences, shuffle them, and then put them back below the stories between two covers to make a Flip Book for Sums of 6. Children have fun flipping to find the story to go with each equation.
