Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 38-39.

Once or twice a week, to help children understand the attribute of length and practice language for comparing lengths, first ask a helper to choose two items from a collection and place them in a haphazard fashion in a place where everyone can see. Then ask which one the class thinks is longer and which one is shorter? Demonstrate how to match up the ends of the objects to compare the lengths and have the class help describe the outcome.

In the case above everyone can say, “The lengths are not the same. The blue marker is longer than the pink eraser. The pink eraser is shorter than the blue marker.” Let others make the choice of objects and repeat 3 or 4 times.
