By the beginning of October two groups of ten will accumulate on the Counting Tape. If we continue to model that we write a number by writing the tens first and then the extra ones, children will come to associate the first number with the groups of tens and the second number with the ones, furthering their understanding of place value.
As each new dot is added to the ten grid, the class can see another combination for ten, naming the number of dots and how many more are needed to fill the Grid. The Ten Grid also helps children think of 6,7,8, and 9 as 5+1, 5+2, 5+3, 5+4. We can also use the Ten Grids to help children see ways to add and subtract ten from any number by asking them to predict the result before taking away or adding a full ten grid.
