On the 12th of the month, we can see that five and five are ten and two more inches make twelve inches or one foot. Let children compare their shoes to the foot to see how much smaller their feet are compared to our standard foot.
After the 12th, invite the class to tell the day’s length in inches and then in feet and inches. For example, on the 14th, everyone can see 14 inches is the same as one foot and two more inches. Instead of trying to find an object to match 14 inches, let the day’s helper choose a shorter object from a collection of shorter items and have the class guess and check its length to the nearest inch.
