Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 49.

At the end of the month, ask the children to think of one thing they have noticed on the Calendar this month. It is fun to listen for math language that you have been modeling the past four weeks.

We hope children mention the green, green, orange pattern; the green triangles coming in twos or pairs; the orange squares going down like stair-steps in a diagonal to the left; the +6 pattern of the orange squares on each diagonal; the greens always showing 1 more and 1 less than their green neighboring triangle; Monday to Friday school days being blue spaces and weekends being yellow spaces, and so on.

Some teachers make a class chart to display the children’s comments. See EDC p. 27 for an example.
