Read Every Day Counts Teacher’s Guide, Kanter and Gillespie, Great Source, 2005 or 2012 edition, p. 50-51.
For the first two weeks of the month, a volunteer will count out seven counters and place them into the two clear pockets each day. The day’s combination for seven is then recorded with matching domino halves.
Two or three times during the week, invite the class to suggest addition or take away subtraction stories that go with the counters in the pockets and record one of the stories with words and with a number sentence.
For subtraction, encourage the use of the total amount to start with and then take away one part or the other. This will help children begin to see the inverse relationship between familiar addition facts and their related subtraction facts or “fact family”.
