The Depositor collects one rock each day of November. On November 10th the full pocket of ten rocks is moved over to the “tens side” of the place value mat to help children see that 10 represents 1 group of ten and 0 extra ones. Each month, as children use the Daily Depositor to revisit sets 1 to 30 or 31, they get lots of practice with building, reading, and writing numbers as groups of ten and extra ones. The collection of rocks or other counters can also provide a rich resource for sorting and classifying.
Note: It is not shown in the photos above, but some teachers have added a second pocket on the white side so that after 5 objects have collected in the top pocket, the sixth through tenth objects can collect in a second pocket attached below. This makes it easier to see at a glance the total number of “extra ones” when 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 are shown as 5+1, 5+2, 5+3, 5+4 and 5+5 objects. Also, children who visualize 6, 7, 8, and 9 as a group of five plus 1, 2, 3, or 4 extra ones may think of “pulling out fives” to make a ten when adding addends 6 to 9, later in the year.
