Children will begin with 1 cent on the first of the month and collect 1 penny each day of December, trading for a nickel whenever possible until winter break.

On the 6th through the 9th, and on the 16th through the 19th of the month, help children see each 5+ fact to make 6, 7, 8, and 9 using a nickel plus pennies.

This would be a good time to print and cut apart TR 24 Coin Comparing Cards to help children with instant recognition of 5+1, 5+2, 5+3, and 5+4. Then show children two cards at a time and observe how they find the sums.
